Project: Faery Folk Book Series

Role: Creative Director

This book series is a part of the self-initiated Legends of the Faery Folk childrens media property. At its center, lies a core mythology that aligns and interacts with human history. From this fantastic mythology, springs a variety of literary products- three individual books and two book series. Each is intended to stand on its own, while exposing a specific portion of the Faery Folk world.

Using whimsical information graphics, I provide an overview of how each book supports the time line of the mythology and at what point it would expose key story elements. As a multi-media product there are numerous puzzle pieces, both strategic and tactical, that must be considered. The order of presentation is critical to holding our readers’ attention over an extended period of time.

The first media product released was the Faery Folk collectible dolls. Each doll comes with a storybook that introduces the world of the Faery Folk. Only a small portion of the involved mythology is suggested. The doll booklets are intended to provide a brief overview while keeping the child engaged with their doll. A craft project is included made from natural materials found in the child’s garden or park.

All of the books will be a combination of illustrations and images that jointly capture the beauty of the Faery Folk world we envision. We have made a conscious choice to limit dark, Gothic imagery in order to spark a healthy curiosity for the natural world.

The entire property is intended to educate children about the balance nature must maintain. This message is subtle and never distracts from the central story, but is an important part of the Faery’s perspective on humankind. Environmental degradation is the inheritance of today’s generations and they must be provided with the optimism and compassion to work towards a harmonious existence. Developing healthy stories around this reality is the first part of our goal.

Conclusion: it has taken over seven years for the Faery Folk mythology to define itself, but we are finally there. We began with a simple story that has burgeoned to incorporate television scripts, book series, merchandise and interactive properties. All of them have evolved to accurately weave a tale that begins in Scithian times, moves to Elizabethan England and finally arrives at modern day.
