KIND: PHYSICAL

Interstudio Retail Architecture

Project: Interstudio

Role: Information Designer

Interstudio was an interior architecture concept of entertainment and interaction screens set in a retail environment. The concept was never executed, but represented an intriguing project where technology intersected with the physical world.

Interstudio was the first project I began during my years at Razorfish and the only to truly explore media within a physical environment.

We explored screens for both entertainment and for interaction that changed purpose depending on a user’s proximity to sensors within the space.

Entry points differed from purchase points. We analyzed a retail browsing and shopping experience to understand behavior throughout the experience.

Our work extended the retail architectural experience into the home using a site called “Lyte.” The site would remember your physical movement through the retail environment and translate it into recommendations on the virtual site.

Conclusion: Although this project ceased in the middle of the Architecture Phase, the lessons learned and the creativity that was generated made it a significant project. It allowed me to fully explore screen based experiences extended to a physical setting. The project provided continuity with work I had done in home automation for three years in the early 1990’s.
